If we Save the Ocean, We Save Oursleves.

If we Save the Ocean, We Save Oursleves. - Sow & Arrow

Like many health-conscious people, I once took fish oil daily and believed it was the gold standard for omega-3s. Every research paper, wellness guru, every conversation about inflammation or brain health seemed to point in the same direction: fish oil. So, I took it. religiously and so did my family and I didn’t question it. I simply trusted I was choosing the best.

Over time, I began to question my beliefs around fish oil. Was there really only one way to get the essential fatty acids so important to human health? I started to question not just what I was putting into my body, but where it came from… and at what cost.

Fish oil comes with a heavy environmental burden. We’re often told it’s a “natural” source of omega-3s, but rarely do we hear the full story. Industrial-scale production of fish oil contributes significantly to the depletion of our oceans. Entire schools of wild fish such as sardines, herring, anchovies and mackerel, which are vital food sources for larger marine predators, are harvested in vast quantities, not for human food, but to be processed into oil.

This relentless demand disrupts delicate marine ecosystems. When these small fish are overfished, the ripple effect is profound. Seabirds, whales, dolphins, and larger predatory fish struggle to find food. Biodiversity suffers. Entire oceanic food chains are thrown off balance.

Bycatch, the issues of non-target species like turtles and juvenile fish caught and discarded during the trawling process is also a major environmental issue. Fish oil production is contributing to an ecological crisis we can no longer ignore.

Sir David Attenborough said just yesterday, "The ocean can bounce back to life, if it is left alone it may not just recover but thrive beyond anything anyone alive has ever seen. A healthier ocean ecosystem would also be able to trap more carbon dioxide, helping to protect the world form climate change. If we save the ocean, we save ourselves.

I didn’t want my wellness to come at the cost of the ocean’s health. And so, to the alternative.

Ahiflower® oil, a regeneratively farmed, plant-based source of omega-3s, grown right here in the UK. Not only does it provide ALA and SDA (which convert to EPA), but it also contains GLA for hormonal health and skin health. The anti-inflammatory benefits are broad and impressive, but what truly sets Ahiflower apart is how it’s grown: with care for the soil, pollinators, and biodiversity.

Ahiflower® oil, supports regenerative agriculture. It’s bee-friendly, non-GMO, and cultivated without harming marine life or depleting wild fish stocks. It’s proof that we can meet our nutritional needs and protect the planet, if we choose better.

So no, I don’t take fish oils anymore.

I take something better for my health, for biodiversity, and for the future of our oceans, I take Regenerative Omegas.
